Joyful Brotherly Love. Fellowship, Mingle & Play. Epilepsy Support & Awareness

A diagnosis that does not go away changes more than a medical chart. It changes how a person plans a week, how they explain themselves at work or school, and how much energy is left at the end of the day. Breaking Out The Cocoon is a nonprofit foundation in Playa Vista, CA, built around that reality, with programs for people living with chronic conditions and for those living with epilepsy.

Why the Name Breaking Out The Cocoon

A cocoon is not a place anyone is meant to stay. It is a stage: protective, confining, and temporary. Living with a long-term condition can feel much the same, as if life has narrowed to appointments, symptoms, and careful planning around both.

The name points toward something else. Support and education exist to help people move out of the narrow space a diagnosis can create and into a fuller life, one that includes the condition without being defined by it. That idea sits underneath every program the foundation runs. The aim is not only to get through the hard days but to build the knowledge and connection that make the other days easier.

Our Programs

The foundation's work is organized into three program areas. Each has its own page with more detail, and together they are listed on the Breaking Out The Cocoon programs page.

Chronic Condition Support

Some conditions are managed rather than cured. People living with them learn to read their own patterns, plan around limits, and keep explaining something invisible to people who cannot see it. Chronic condition support is for anyone on that long road, whether the diagnosis arrived last month or many years ago. The focus stays on the person, not the label attached to them.

Epilepsy Education and Support

Epilepsy carries a weight of misunderstanding, and that misunderstanding can isolate a person as much as the seizures do. Old myths still shape how classmates, coworkers, and even relatives react. Epilepsy education and support pairs accurate information with encouragement, so people living with epilepsy can talk about their condition with confidence and the people around them know how to respond.

Family and Caregiver Support

A chronic condition affects a household, not only the person who has it. Parents, partners, siblings, and close friends carry their own questions, their own worry, and their own fatigue, often without anywhere to put it. Family and caregiver support recognizes the people standing beside someone through a diagnosis and the years that follow.

Education That Changes the Conversation

Knowledge does two jobs at once. For the person living with a condition, understanding it makes it easier to ask useful questions at appointments, notice what matters in daily life, and speak up at school or at work. Confidence grows when the unknowns shrink.

For everyone else, understanding replaces fear with practical awareness. A teacher who knows what fatigue from a chronic illness looks like responds differently to a student who seems withdrawn. A coworker who has learned what a seizure can look like stays calm instead of freezing. Small shifts like these change how safe and accepted someone feels in the places they spend their days. Education is one of the clearest ways a nonprofit can widen the circle of people who get it.

Who We Serve

Breaking Out The Cocoon is based in Playa Vista and works with people facing chronic conditions and epilepsy, along with those who love and care for them. Some arrive soon after a diagnosis, looking for a place to start. Others have lived with a condition for a long time and want connection with people who understand without needing the whole story explained first. There is room for both.

No one needs to have everything figured out before reaching out. Questions are a reasonable place to begin.

How Our Programs Work

Every situation is different, and support that helps one person may not fit the next. The foundation's programs are shaped with that in mind. To see how support and education are delivered, read about how our programs work.
